BETH WINTERBURN | Ink, Acrylic, Oil Stick, Latex, Graphite | 81x107 cm • 32x42 in

INTERWOVEN COLLECTION NO. 4

Beth Winterburn’s painting No. 4 from the Interwoven Collection is rooted in a deep exploration of memory, trust, and the courage it takes to remember. Inspired by the words of Bessel van der Kolk in The Body Keeps the Score, “It takes enormous trust and courage to allow yourself to remember,” Winterburn’s series reflects her own journey of connecting past experiences with the present moment.

Every collection begins with connection, whether through the physical interaction between hand, brush, and paint, or the conceptual bridging of past and present, dreams and reality. For Winterburn, this series began with a simple yet profound connection between herself and the canvas—a process of trusting her body to remember and translate fragmented thoughts and memories onto the surface, choosing materials that best convey the language of her ideas.

The artwork is characterized by airy strokes and watery pools of colour juxtaposed against clean edges and fine lines. Bold, earthy tones ground the composition, while feather-like sweeps of colour suggest a sense of movement and lightness. This painting reflects Winterburn’s current season of life—at a crossroads between the past and the future, where she weaves together the threads of both her good and challenging experiences.

As you engage with this work, Winterburn invites you to reflect on your own journey. Through her abstract approach, she offers a space for viewers to see their own life tapestry unfolding, and to find connections within the artwork that resonate with their personal story.

Artist’s Vision

BETH WINTERBURN

Beth’s work is defined by bold, gestural brushstrokes and a minimalist approach, creating compositions that are both dynamic and deliberate. Rooted in her analytical background in photography and architecture, she infuses each piece with a calculated structure—balancing light and dark, counting evens and odds, and visually dividing the canvas into thirds and fifths. These principles ground her work in a sense of order, while her intuitive use of colour, shape, line, and texture evokes the fluidity and complexity of human experience.

Her art explores interpersonal dynamics, with each stroke representing a memory, a moment, or an emotion. Beth’s paintings become a personal journal of both the past and the future—capturing the highs and lows of her journey, and the tension between longing and acceptance, conflict and serenity. Through her work, she tells a story of human relationships, translated through a visual language that communicates the depth of connection and disconnection.

Driven by a desire for transparency and vulnerability, Beth often leaves marks and paint strokes exposed, allowing them to speak for themselves. She sees these raw moments as integral to the emotional truth of the piece, reflecting the complexities and evolving nature of relationships. Line and colour serve as bridges, bringing cohesion and connectivity to seemingly unrelated gestures, while the process itself remains a central focus of her creative practice. For Beth, the journey is more significant than the final product—the collected moments, like relationships, unfold over time and carry the weight of personal transformation.
