Structure and Spontaneity: The Gestural Abstractions of Beth Winterburn
Beth Winterburn is an abstract painter whose mixed media works - combining ink, acrylic, latex and oil stick on raw canvas - explore the complexities of relationships through color, line, and texture. Her gestural brushstrokes and minimalist details create visual stories that balance tension, serenity, and connection, allowing her work to serve as both journal and record of lived experience.
Beth Winterburn began her studies in Architecture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, but quickly realized her true place was in the Fine Arts department, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art in 2002. During college, she spent much of her time in the darkroom, developing film; a process that shaped her analytical eye, patience, and attention to composition, while also exploring other media, including clay, watercolor, sculpture, printmaking, and small-scale painting projects. This early photography experience would later influence her painting, helping her balance color, line, and form with precision. After graduating, she worked for a couple of years alongside a photojournalistic photographer.
After stepping away from creative work for some time, Beth began exploring painting more seriously. A commission for a large abstract piece became the turning point that sparked her professional focus on painting. Drawing on her Fine Arts background, multi-media experience, and the compositional sensibilities honed through photography, she developed a distinctive approach to mixed media, combining ink and acrylic on raw canvas to create gestural, expressive works.
Beth’s artistic philosophy is deeply rooted in the interplay of structure and spontaneity. She approaches each canvas with a mathematical mindset - counting evens and odds, balancing lights and darks, and dividing compositions into thirds and fifths - while simultaneously embracing the expressive freedom of gesture.
Her pieces are records of memory and aspiration, tracing her own journey with its hills and valleys. Through ink and acrylic on raw canvas, she communicates the nuances of longing, acceptance, tension, and resolve. Her marks and brushstrokes are intentionally left visible, allowing the artwork to speak independently, inviting viewers to engage in and relate to its unfolding narrative.
Beth Winterburn’s work has been featured on HGTV’s Property Brothers and in print and online publications including The Koronette, Fanique Magazine, Maker’s Movement, At Home Memphis & Mid-South, Orlando Soria, I AM THE LAB, and Style Blueprint.
