Customs & International Purchases
Artwork purchased through Moné Gallery may be subject to customs duties, import taxes, or tariffs depending on where the artwork originates and where it's being delivered. Because we represent artists worldwide, shipments may cross international borders. We do not calculate or collect customs fees, they are determined by local customs agencies based on the artwork's declared value, origin, destination, and classification.
What are customs fees and tariffs?
Customs fees and tariffs are taxes or duties imposed by governments on imported goods. For fine art, these fees are typically based on the artwork's declared value, material, category, country of origin, and destination country. Rates are set by local customs authorities and may vary or change due to regulatory updates.
Each country has its own rules for importing fine art. We recommend checking your country's official customs website for the most accurate and current information.
Who is responsible for paying these fees?
The buyer, as the "importer of record" is responsible for all applicable customs duties, import taxes, and tariffs when purchasing artwork that ships from another country.
Your shipping carrier will typically contact you directly with payment instructions, often through an online portal. Once payment is received, customs will release the artwork for final delivery. Delayed payment may result in delivery delays, storage fees, or the artwork being returned to the seller.
When and how are fees collected?
Customs fees are assessed when the artwork crosses an international border and enters your country. Fees are typically based on:
- The artwork's declared value
- Package size and weight
- Country of origin and destination country
- Artwork classification (original, limited edition, reproduction, etc.)
The local customs authority or shipping carrier will contact you directly to collect payment.
Where is the artwork shipping from?
Each artwork listing displays the artist's location. This helps you anticipate whether your purchase will involve international shipping and potential customs considerations. If you have questions about a specific piece, contact us at info@monegallery.com before purchasing.
How does Moné Gallery handle pricing and taxes?
Domestic shipments (within the same country):
When the artwork ships from and to the same country, no international customs fees apply. Applicable local sales taxes (GST/HST/PST in Canada, sales tax in the U.S., VAT in the EU, etc.) may be calculated at checkout based on your location.
International shipments (cross-border):
Prices exclude customs duties, import taxes, and tariffs for international shipments. These fees will be billed separately by your shipping carrier or local customs authority upon arrival in your country. The artist will provide all necessary customs documentation (commercial invoice, certificate of authenticity, etc.) to facilitate clearance.
How can I estimate fees before purchasing?
Moné Gallery cannot predict customs duties or taxes in advance, as they are determined by your local customs authority based on the specific artwork and shipment details. For guidance, please consult:
- Canada: Canada Border Services Agency
- United States: U.S. Customs & Border Protection
- United Kingdom: UK Government Customs
- European Union: European Commission Taxation & Customs
- Other countries: Contact your local customs authority or shipping carrier

Customs Fee Refunds
Customs fees are imposed by government agencies, not Moné Gallery, and cannot be refunded through us. However, we can provide documentation, such as invoices, certificates of authenticity, or shipping details, to support any refund request you submit directly to your local customs authority.
