GILL BUSTAMANTE | Oil | 152x91.5 cm • 60x36 in

Beltane

Beltane by Gill Bustamante is a large panoramic oil painting of a woodland glade in springtime, with a stream winding through bluebells, wildflowers, and blossoming trees. The viewer is drawn into the scene between two shaded banks on either side of the stream, where the light opens onto a clearing beyond. Through the trees, a meadow shimmers with the suggestion that something is about to be revealed.

The painting is created in a contemporary style with Art Nouveau influences. Its inspiration comes from the artist’s visit to Mayfield in Sussex on May 1st, 2025, the day of Beltane, an ancient festival marking the beginning of summer. Immersed in the birdsong and abundant life of May, the artist experienced the feeling of being transported to an otherworldly place. The work is dedicated to all those with a romantic spirit who cherish landscapes and nature and believe they should be protected.

Artist’s Vision

gill bustamante

Gill is a British visual artist who creates semi-abstract landscapes that transcend mere representation, capturing the soul of a place rather than just its physical form. Inspired by her walks through nature, she absorbs the sights, scents, and energy of the landscape, later distilling these impressions from memory onto canvas. This intuitive approach allows her to preserve the most vivid and emotive elements, evoking the essence of a season or terrain. Birds and wildlife often emerge within her compositions, infusing her work with movement, life, and a deep connection to the natural world.
